Is it just me, or is everybody in the world having a lot of conversations that begin with 'just who is on Facebook?' or 'who exactly uses Twitter?'

Maybe it is just me, but in case it isn't, here's a nice set of data showing exactly that. Make of it what you will, but it should help you answer some of the questions you (or your clients) might have.

Watch out, here come some numbers

Econsultancy have noted an 86 per cent rise in video sharing since May 2010. It's mainly been on Facebook, with 62.5m shares in December, Twitter only reached around 640k, while blog video sharing dropped from 460k to 243k.

That means Facebook is getting almost 100 shares for every single share Twitter gets, and 260 for every share on a blog.

At the same time, eMarketer are reported to be claiming that 'over half of US internet users (including users on mobile devices) logged into Facebook at least once a month in 2010, with a forecasted rise to 57% this year'.

The steep growth curve of recent years is predicted to level off – mainly because there are so few people left to recruit. (We Are Social predict that '92.6% of US social network users will be on Facebook by 2013'.

Twitter is still growing apace, but still is in a rut in the US - fewer than one in ten of social media users in the US engaged with the site in 2010. But that still adds up to more than 20 million people - which is an awful lot of prospects, or customers, or donors.
