I sit in a breakfast nook/Off Fifty-second street,/ Excited and abuzz/As the clever hopes aspire/Of an optimistic decade:/Waves of thinking without fear/Circulate over the bright/And darkened lands of the earth,/Obsessing our working lives;/ The unquenchable feeling of cheer/Pervades the March night./ All I have is a voice,/To acclaim the brilliant work,/The work done all over the world,/By agencies just like ours,/From Barcelona to here,/ In twice-named New York,/ Where the marvellous WaterAid films/ Are justly dignified,/Justice allows no choice/In whatever department we are:/We must be creative or die. Excuse the rather purple words, but as Jake and I bask in another freezing Manhattan morning I am filled with huge optimism. The work we saw at the Caples awards last night was truly great. A magnificent campaign for mini in New Zealand, some lovely stuff for Guide Dogs Australia and our own WaterAid viral and tv campaign to name but a few. But what really impressed me was that this was creativity with a purpose: everything had worked and had results to prove it. There were, to paraphrase Mr Kitcatt, no cows painted green as a stunt. So my real message is, be proud of yourselves: when we do things properly , we do them as well as anybody in the world.
