Put the date in your diary. Online newspaper publishing will change on 2nd February. Because that's when The Daily will launch.

The Daily, the new online-only newspaper, looks set to make unlikely bedfellows of Steve Jobs and Rupert Murdoch. Forget paywalls and subscription models (principally because they don't work, as Mr Murdoch knows only too well from his experience with The Times, which is rumoured to have lost 99.5 per cent of its online readership, and a commensurate amount in online advertising revenue.)

The Daily is expected to cost just 99 cents a day and to be available from the App Store for iPad only. The only fly in the ointment is the name, which is rumoured to have started out as The Daily Planet, home of Clark Kent, but even these two titans of technology proved no match for Superman himself.

With a rumoured 100 journalists employed for this project alone, and the smart money on an announcement in San Francisco on 19th February, this may well be a date to remember in the annals of online publishing.

It could just be the day on which the first online newspaper to make money is revealed to the world.

We'll have to wait and see

We'll have to wait and see what effect Mr Jobs's unfortunate illness will have on the timing of this announcement. Let's hope he has a speedy recovery.
