On a recent visit to Liverpool, I was struck by the transformation the city has experienced in recent years. Liverpool has always been a cultural centre, with its art school and music scene, but its commitment to celebrating the arts seems stronger than ever and it is now the home of some brilliant modern architecture, which seems to complement the more traditional buildings.

One of the most exciting things I saw during my stay was "Turning the Place Over”, an installation by artist Richard Wilson.

Wilson has transformed a derelict Yates’ Wine Lodge, opposite Moorfields train station, by cutting out an egg-shaped section of the building’s front and fixing it to a giant pivot. The facade rotates like a huge opening and closing window, giving passers-by a glimpse of the interior.

The work was commissioned as part of the Liverpool Biennial, and was due to be dismantled in 2008, but is still up and running, and giving people emerging from the train station a pleasant surprise every day.
